SORROW FOR SIN: True sorrow for sin, or godly sorrow, is that contrition produced by the special work of the Holy Spirit in the soul, which leads to real and hearty repentance and to salvation. It is a sorrow, not merely for the consequences or penalty of sin, but for the sin itself, as something hateful and contrary to the holiness of God. Godly sorrow is distinguished from \"the sorrow of the world\" or mere remorse, which does not spring from the work of the Holy Spirit in the soul, and does not lead to salvation. (9.1, 15.4)
